1. Regular Maintenance:

Shaking and Vacuuming:

  • Shake: Regularly shake the rug outside to remove dust and dirt.
  • Vacuum: Use a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment to gently remove loose dirt and debris. Avoid using beater bars.

Brushing:

  • Brush: Use a wire wool comb or a pet brush to gently brush the rug in the direction of the wool. This helps to maintain its fluffiness and remove tangles.

2. Spot Cleaning:

For Small Stains:

  • Blot: Use a clean, dry cloth to blot any spills immediately. Avoid rubbing, which can spread the stain.
  • Damp Cloth: For sticky or stubborn spots, dampen a cloth with cool water and gently blot the area.
  • Mild Soap Solution: Use a mixture of cool water and a mild wool detergent. Dampen a cloth in the solution and blot the stain gently. Rinse by blotting with a cloth dampened with plain cool water.

For Grease or Oil Stains:

  • Cornstarch or Talcum Powder: Sprinkle a generous amount on the stain and let it sit for a few hours to absorb the oil. Vacuum up the powder and gently brush the area.

3. Deep Cleaning:

Hand Washing:

  • Soak: Fill a bathtub or a large basin with cool water. Add a small amount of wool-specific detergent.
  • Gently Agitate: Submerge the rug and gently agitate it by hand. Avoid twisting or wringing.
  • Rinse: Drain the soapy water and refill with cool water to rinse. Gently press the rug to remove soap residues.

Machine Washing (if permitted):

  • Check Label: Only machine wash if the care label allows.
  • Wool Setting: Use a delicate or wool-specific cycle with cool water.
  • Wool Detergent: Add a wool-specific detergent.
  • Avoid Spinning: Use a low spin setting or skip spinning to prevent damage.

4. Drying:

  • Air Dry: Lay the rug flat in a well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight or heat sources. Never tumble dry.
  • Reshape: Gently stretch and reshape the rug while it’s damp to maintain its form.

5. Additional Tips:

  • Avoid Bleach and Harsh Chemicals: They can damage the wool fibers and the leather backing.
  • Rotate Regularly: Rotate your rug periodically to ensure even wear.
  • Professional Cleaning: Consider professional cleaning for larger or heavily soiled sheepskin rugs.
